The semi-dry blotting technique was first introduced by Anderson in 1984. Initially, the technique was performed horizontally using plate electrodes. Gel and nitrocellulose membranes were sandwiched between moist filter paper sheets soaked with a buffer. The filter papers served as ion reservoirs and also replaced the buffer in the wet state. The semi-dry blotting system, with its high simplicity, preserved the basic principles of the semi-dry blotting technique while introducing some new features, offering ease of use and quick setup.

For the first time in 1984, the Semi-Dry Blotting technique was introduced by Andersen. Initially, the blotting technique was performed horizontally, using plate electrodes. The gel and nitrocellulose membrane were sandwiched between layers of wetted filter paper. The filter papers served as ionic reservoirs and also replaced the buffer in the moist state. The Semi-Dry Blotting system, with its high simplicity, preserved the fundamental principles of the semi-dry blotting technique and, on the other hand, introduced some new features, making it easy to use and set up quickly.
